”Black Kiss 2” issues 1-6 (of 6) by Howard Chaykin

I put this series on my pull list because I wanted to read some Chaykin. He’s one of those cartoonists that I used to like a lot but since my tastes moved away from mainstream Marvel and DC comics I really haven’t read anything by him in a long time. I read some issues of “Black Kiss 1” back in the early 90s but not all of it. I remember it being okay but more famous for its sex drawings than for its story. But at least this wasn’t more of the mainstream stuff that I wasn’t interested in.

”Black Kiss 2” is a story that spans nearly the whole 20th century. It tells the story about a female sex demon of some type. I can’t remember the exact type but she gets some sort of power and immortality from sex and occasionally killing people during sex. She also finds a he/she partner every twenty years or so as a companion. It’s kind of a sex demon biography.

I ended up really liking the story. That surprised me a little. I thought all the sex scenes worked fine. Some people might see them as gratuitous but it is the story of a sex demon so they fit right in to me. Plus it’s probably the fact that they’re drawings that make people blush. A best seller like “Shades of Grey” can be filled with sex scenes but draw a picture of it and somehow that’s dirtier. I was okay with it.

Oh, by the way, it’s a scary story too. You don’t want anything to do with a sex demon. You’ll just end up dead.

Chaykin can draw well and tell a story well. His stuff is as good here as it usually is. I liked it. If you’re a Chaykin fan you’ll probably like it too. Just don’t be expecting a mainstream Chaykin action story.
