  • This week’s comic book cover to look at and examine is Captain America # 230 by Ron Wilson and Bob Layton. This is a comic book that I bought off of the stands back in 1977 and I’ve always liked the cover. It’s a flawed cover to be sure but what makes it for me is the look on Captain America’s face. His teeth are gritted half way between determination and desperation.

I’ve always found the Hulk’s hand to be the weak spot in this cover. The thumb looks odd and he doesn’t seem to be hitting Cap’s shield in the right spot. Overall it’s a middling drawing of a fist at best and I mostly ignore it. All of the action is on the Captain America part of the cover.

I think they do a excellent job of capturing Cap holding his shield up with all his strength trying to protect himself. Eyes closed and teeth gritted he’s doing his best to survive. They focused the color all in the main image. The background is knocked out to a light yellow as it’s not that important. No need for the sky to even be blue. The pieces of the broken building which add movement and danger to the piece are a solid orange shade that link them to the background yet allow them to stand out just a bit.

The Captain America logo looks fine in red, white, and blue against the yellow background but the “Then Came… The Hulk!” cover copy seems useless and out of place to me. It was placed too low and is being trimmed. The green color doesn’t work and neither does the black box. Plus the cover has a big green fist on it. That’s enough of a Hulk indication for me. They could have edited that cover copy right out is what I say.

The final thing that makes this cover is the textured zip-a-tone that makes the grey shadow on Cap from his shield. I think that touch adds a little extra drama to the cover. It helps emphasize that the shield is Cap’s protection but with the Hulk pounding on it the shield is also a bit of a danger. Plus the grey divides the color in a way I like. Nice stuff.
