Comics I Bought This Week: August 13, 2011
I’m back from the comic shop this week and I got two new comics:
And now for a review of something I’ve read recently.
“Invincible Ultimate Collection Volume 6” by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, and Cory Walker
I’m always on board with a new “Invincible” hard cover collection and here is the latest collecting issues 60-70. With this volume I realized that “Invincible” may be the bloodiest super hero book out there and I’ve read some pretty bloody super hero comics. What makes “Invincible” different is that even though it’s bloody it is still a lot of fun.
I find most ultra-violent books to be over-the-top on purpose as they try to shock the reader. Sometimes this works but only rarely. It’s hard to shock the reader when we all know it’s coming. Most of the time “Invincible” is a fun super hero comic so when the real bloody stuff comes you feel it. That and the bloody stuff is usually a consequence of super powered people fighting rather than it being the point of the book as often is the case. I got nothing against gore-hounds getting their fill of gore it’s just not my thing.
What’s happening in the plot of the book is that the whole Earth is in danger not only from a few local crazy super villains but also from an alien race of super beings called Viltrumites. They are a race of Superman level people and they have been conquering planets for a long time. They’ve been a main part of the “Invincible” plot line since near the beginning of the series and they’re back again in this volume.
The artwork, mostly by Ryan Ottley on pencils, Cliff Rathburn on inks, and FCO Plascencia on colors, is top shelf superhero stuff. The storytelling is good and the art is all clear, well drawn, well crafted, and generally impressive. It’s been that way for the whole series so it comes as no surprise. And the fights, especially between whoever and the Viltrumites can get real violent and bloody. I think I mentioned that, didn’t I?
So if you’re a super hero fan and you’re not buying “Invincible” I have to ask you, “Why?”. It’s one of the best super hero comics out there.
