Comics I Bought This Week: February 9, 2013
I’m back from the comic shop this week and I got seven new comics plus a trade paperback collection:
And now for a review of something I’ve read recently.
”Point of Impact” Issues 1-4 by Jay Faerber and Koray Kuranel
I’m strangely ambivalent about ”Point of Impact”. I picked up the first issue of this four issue mini-series and was unsure if I wanted to buy the final three issues. I obviously decided that it was good enough for me to buy the other three as they were published but I’m still oddly undecided what I think of it.
”Point of Impact” is pretty much a straight forward police procedural. It’s like an episode of “Law and Order” or some such cop show. And by straight forward I mean it’s full of the twists and turns that you’d expect in such a TV show. In the first issue a woman is murdered by being thrown off a roof. That scene is illustrated right on the cover and it’s that cover that got me to look at the book in the first place. It’s a very nice cover. The rest of the four issues are all about the the cops and a couple of other people trying to figure out who killed the woman.
They story is well done. It really didn’t grab me as much as I hoped it would but that might be because I’ve watched so many police procedurals on TV. But there are very few such stories in comics so I guess that’s what kept me comics back. It was familiar yet different. Like I said I am oddly ambivalent about this one.
The artwork is in black and white including the covers. I guess they really wanted to keep the mood going. Once again I’m a little undecided about the artwork. It’s richly illustrative stuff for the most part and has good storytelling but at time I thought it was too illustrative. At times I found some of those little details to be distracting. Sometimes I was really impressed with the art and other times I wasn’t. Odd.
This probably sounds like a bit more of a mixed review that I mean it to be because overall there was more I liked about this comic than disliked. I wouldn’t have bought it otherwise. So if you’re in the mood for a solid police procedural give this one a read.
