I’m back from the comic shop this week and I got seven new comics:

  • Dark Horse Presents – 20

    • And now for a review of something I’ve read recently.

    ”Bloodshot” Issues 1-6 by Duane Swierczynski and Manuel Garcia

    With issue five I decided that I liked “Bloodshot” and finally put it on my pull list. I’ve been trying out all the new Valiant comics and deciding which ones I like. At four bucks a pop comics are expensive these days so I can’t get everything but this one made the cut.

    “Bloodshot” is about a super soldier. The military made him with all sorts of computers and nanites inside him to heal him when he’s hurt and help him fight. To control him they planted memories in his head and activate the ones they want to motivate him to fight. Bloodshot, the name of the book as well as the character, breaks free of the military’s hold on him and fights back to try and find out who and what he really is. Nothing too new about that plot but it’s well executed.

    I’d describe this book as exciting. Lot’s of action but action with some brains behind it. I like that. Mindless action is not my thing. Bloodshot starts out by himself but gains some allies along the way and makes an assault on the stronghold of the military guys who have his real identity stored on some computer. Some day I’m going to have to write a piece on how accelerated healing is, story-wise, the greatest super power invented in the last fifty years. Bloodshot has it so you can have dramatic and dangerous moments that he’s healed up from quickly. This story milks those moments well.

    Though I’ve liked Valiant’s illustrative artists in general I find Garcia to be the best at action. He tells a good story and his action scenes have impact. That’s not always the case with modern illustrative comic artists but it is in this case. Bloodshot’s action scenes are a lot more exciting than most comics.

    So there you go. I wasn’t sure at first if “Bloodshot” was going to be for me but it turns out that it is. Give it a read if you’re in the mood for some brooding and some action.
