I’m back from the comic shop this week and I got three new comics plus a hard cover collection:

  • Mudman – 2

  • O.M.A.C. – 5

  • Stormwatch – 5

    • And now for a review of something I’ve read recently.

    ”Mystic” Issues 1-4 by G. Willow Wilson and David Lopez

    I was a fan of Crossgen Comics back when they were coming out in the early 2000s. “Negation” was one of my favorite comics and I was bummed when the company folded before their big, years in the making, crossover “Neagtion War” was finished. After Crossgen’s property was bought by Disney and then, years later, Marvel Comics was also bought by Disney we end up with Marvel Comics publishing new Crossgen comics. “Mystic” is one of those comics.

    “Mystic” is one of the Crossgen books that I didn’t even buy regularly. It’s Marvel’s third Crossgen title after “Sigil” and “Ruse” and I bought them all to hopefully encourage Marvel to finish the “Negation War” story. I doubt they will since all the new titles have “A Universe Reimagined” as their slogan and not a lot to do with the old Crossgen Universe but I can hope.

    “Mystic” is the story of two orphan girls who work in a laundry run by a mean woman. All the girls want is the freedom to learn magic. Only the children of nobles get to learn at the special magic school though. Except through so odd circumstances one of the girls gets in where she is a prize student but a fish out of water. There is nothing very new here.

    The book is pretty well done. The art it pretty even if it is in that under-inked no line weight style that I’m not too fond of. The color is also vibrant and well done. The script is okay. It’s just that the plot has been done to death. It seems to be aimed at young girls so maybe they will like it more.

    Overall all three Marvel/Crossgen series seem to be of the “Because our lawyers demanded it” variety. That’s when publishers crank out an issue of a comic every so often to establish their copyright on the character. The creative teams on the Marvel/Crossgen book all did a nice job but there is no real connection to the old Crossgen universe and since all three books are unconnected mini-series there was no attempt to create a new Crossgen universe I have to wonder what the point of it all is. Oh well, I can always go back and read some old Crossgen comics.
